Angry 99 durango cranks for awhile before it starts

I have a 99 durango that when i go to start it it takes roughly 10 seconds to start. The starter works instantly but truck doesnt fire til after the ten seconds or so. I can turn the truck off right after i get it started and it starts up right away. Someone please help me

do this next time you want to start the truck

turn the key to on and wait for it to prime (you SHOULD hear the pump running when you first put the key on, when it shuts off its done) probably about 10 seconds, then turn the key to start, if that works then the valve that is supposed to stop the fuel line from draining back into the tank is bad

shrpshtr325 - I need to turn my key to the on position a time or two before it will start. What is that valve called? Is it located in the engine compartment?

I was/am worried that this is a fuel pump problem, but would be much happier if it was a valve that is easily replaced.

I bought a '99 Durango with the 5.2 for my first Dodge.

He is referring to the anti-siphon valve that is part of the fuel regulator at the top of the fuel pump. The filter, pump, regulator, anti-siphon valve, and level float is one big unit in the tank. Yes you have to drop the tank to get to it and plan on forking out like $200 bucks.

Now back on topic, if after you turn the key in the on position for 10 seconds and it is still taking a while to fire then replace your spark plugs!
