Well would it still not be a sludge issue even if its the owners fault for not having the plenum gasket repaired? At the end of the day there is still sludge in the engine that may of not been there if it was not for a leaky plenum gasket, to me that is a sludge issue.
IMHO.....I would say, No.

The reason I say this is because the main issue is the "ping" in the motor and not the deposits. The deposits are generally created from the blow by and the ping is what is contribution to the deterioration to the motor and the oil. This is the train of thought of the engineers that made the "Death Flash". Is it a good fix, hell no!

If the spark was retarded from OEM to take care of the ping most of the damage would not happen so excessive deposits would not be combined to the evaporation of oil. This is how they got out of it.

Now under normal drainage the oil would keep enough viscosity and anti-ware additives including detergents to keep it from forming. Also, Fully Synthetic oils have more detergents by default and better ware characteristics then conventionals.

Finally my conclusion,

If you have a leak then fix the Plenum leak ASAP as that only leads to more issues including emissions and deposits in the combustion chamber and heads. And second, do a good flush using a engine flush and/or use Fully Synthetics to clean it out. Sludge by nature is different than engine deposits as sludge also should include H20 (water) which is the building block of sludge and not just deposits. All engines have deposits and some more than others. Anything you can do to fix any issues and/or problems should be used first. The use of Fully Synthetics do a better job in both removal of deposits and anti-ware properties.
