Smile Burp Answer

Thanks for the answer on the procedure. I've got a 2003 Durango with a 4.7L and 98k miles. I've had overheating issues during the summer - live in Florida - for the past couple of years after a water heater replacement. I replaced another one myself last year along with theormostat and both radiator hoses. I thought fan clutch was OK but now it appears to be bad so when I replace it - tomorrow - I'll burp the system.
Thanks again, hope this fixes this issue. Then all I have to worry about are the P0440 and P0441 codes - following other strings on these - and I'm good to go.

Your welcome!

Sounds like a bad gas cap. Please start a new thread or use the advanced search function here in the 1st Gen Durango section on how to seal up an old one.

Thanks again for the assistance. I am following another thread and have posted a question about using a factory gas as opposed to an auto parts one and what the difference is on the code issue, but no response yet.
Anyway off subject - I changed out my fan clutch today, burped the system and took it for a test drive. The temp never got above the half way point which it what it normally runs at, but I felt like I was driving an air boat the whole time because of the roar. Is this the way it will run from now on?

It might settle down as it is supposed to relax, if it doesn't then you have one that is locked up and you need to take it back.

May have to take the fan clutch back as it still seems to run all the time. My impression of the clutch is that it is in essence a spring that when it heats up allows the fan to engage, otherwise it just freewheels. Mine seems be on all the time and I just noticed today that my mileage has gone from 15.9 MPG to 13.9 MPG. Not good with gas being what it is. Just seems like extra strain on the engine. I'm going to at least talk to them at the auto parts store and see what they tell me.

I live in Omaha NE and we have already had a 101 degree day here and I don't even have a clutch fan on, I do have it in the back seat in case I need it, but I couldn't stand the Big Rig Roar that my fan was making. It wasn't seized up or anything I just didn't like it re engaging after I would come to a complete stop. I now get to hear the roar of my 287 and it revs easier.

I also took my clutch fan off over 3 years ago on my D....been through 3 hot summers here in NC ever since, and never had a problem...I still have my fan also just in case...but I remember quite a few members here, and on other forums were all doing the same mod...I believe it like gives back 7 to 10 HP or so..I might be off on that..but I could definitely tell the difference in the way the truck ran after I took it off.....seemed like my 4.7 revved easier also...

yeah that plus my spectre air intake made a big difference, I easily gained a couple MPG from it all.
