Power Steering Help
Ok, hopefully someone can help me before I find a stick of dynamite and insert it up the tailpipe of my truck
For about a year the power steering pump on my truck whined and growled. Earlier this week it decided to give up to ghost. I replaced the pump, and high pressure line (because the o-ring broke and we could not find the right one to stop that leak).
The new pump is also whining and growling like the old one did, and the return line pressure is so high that it pushes the fluid out of the top of the resevior(the fill spot) with the lid on, and we have even bought a new cap. There also appears to be a leak from reservior/pump connection spot, but we are unsure if that is where it is coming from.
I believe that pump is sucking air(probably from the reservior/pump connection) causing the pump to cavitate. however my shadetree expert (father) believes the new pump is bad and is causing the problems.
We are looking for other options or ideas as to what may be going on, We both are not thrilled with the idea of pulling the pump again.
my truck is 01 durango 4.7l 4x4
thanks for any help you could offer.

I posted this before and it might help you. I tend to agree with your shadetree expert on this one. Here is what I posted months ago.
Power steering pumps have two valves built into them. One is a pressure relief valve so when you steer to the end of travel, it does not break the pump shaft. The other valve is basically a flow divider.
The "flow divider" has two paths for the outlet fluid, one is the controlled flow, the other is the excess flow. The controlled flow is always the same (pretty much) no matter how fast you are turning the pump, and goes to the rack valve. The excess flow changes with engine speed, and is sent right back to the tank.
If this does not fix your problem, you might have a stuck or worn rack valve which can cause high pressure to be returning back into your return line to your tank. I cannot see this happening because it did not do this with your old pump but it is just another thought to ponder.
