My son's Durango seems like it is starting in 3rd gear. Been told there is a "pressure sensor" that controls the shifing under the pan. Can anyone validate this?

I have no problem with removing the pan, but I don't have a shop manual on this vehicle, so I don't want to do it if I don't have to.
