Default Exhaust system replacement

Well I won't be doing this till around Feb. 2011 but I always like doing my full research and have plenty of time to discover all the options. I have a Flowmaster in mind and the only choice i saw was the 40 series? Since I am doing this I am going to go ahead and replace my exhaust manifolds with headers instead as I was told it is better for sound and horse power too? Also since Flowmaster doesn't seem to have cats I am replacing that as well. Also is it really possible to run true dual exhaust without heavy modifications? Is this possible? Also is Ceramic better than stainless steel on cats? Why? I want a good hard rumble sound in the exhaust but at the same time I don't want to wake up the neighborhood either as I take the wife to work at 3am I just want to to scream look at me I am powerful! Is there a real difference using headers over exhaust manifolds? I am sure I may have not asked a few questions needed over this so fill in as you see fit. I figured this would cost me around 700 for the parts alone roughly. That is if I use the ceramic cat. since they are 200.00 the stainless steel is only 100.00.

As I said I won't have the money for this till Feb as that is when I get my taxes back but I need a good grip on this as well. I also want to know would it be cheaper to buy all the parts myself then take it to a shop? Would I really save more doing it that way as I know some shops love to mark-up the prices on their stuff.

well in answer to which exhaust, that is up to you, and what YOU like.

i wouldnt waste the money changing the cat, the factory one flows plenty well enough for a stock engine (even a light-moderately modified engine) so save you some money there.

the headers are not really going to make a noticeable difference until you really get the engine built up, if you have plans to be making in the area of 500 hp or so then go for it as it will be part of your build, but otherwise i wouldnt suggest wasting the money on them if all you want is sound.

Thanks shrpshtr325, I thought though with the Cat being12 years old basically it should get replaced? I really don't plan on beefing it up to have 500 HP will replace the engine but keeping it at the standard 318 specs. I still wouldn't mind replacing the cat but I can get the stainless steel one for only 99.99 or get the factory OEM one from partstrain.com for 89.99. I am also planning on making it look pretty as time goes buy too. I hope to complete that if not next year then have it all done the year after. I will be replacing the engine with a reman one so I can know what the engines been through. As I will maintain it.Plus it'll be quicker and easier to pull out and drop in as I can get the engine replaced for 1300 through a friend. So the ceramic vs. the stainless steel I won't really see or feel a difference? I understand the header statement just fine.

Too many questions!

First decide on what you would like to do. Then go from there.

The main things I am hoping to achieve are:

1. Great flow of exhaust.

2. More of a sound like that of a RAM Truck deep & loud but not too loud.

3. Look pretty.

I was thinking Flowmaster due to their lifetime warranty they have.

Go to a 3" exhaust from CAT back to a Flow Master 40 series muffler and single 3" back and out, or 2 1/2 it back with dual exhaust from there and be done.

Most of the time muffler shops will do it custom for like 3-4 hundred bucks.

I went with the Magnaflow cat back stainless system, I love it, sounds great but not too loud and it doesn't have that echoey coffee can sound you get from flowmasters. It's a single 3" system and even the muffler is polished.

Performance-curve.com sells them on Ebay and with their free shipping they're cheaper than Summit!

You'd need part # 15621.
