2001 Durango Shifting problems
I have a 2001 4.7 Durango that is giving me shifting problems. Here is the scenario that happened this weekend; we were driving just fine and got stuck in traffic in PA for road construction. We sat for awhile with the engine running. When we finally got moving our Durango would not shift from low gear. We eventually were able to pull off the road and cool the engine and transmission down. After about an hour I got underneath the Durango and popped off the sensor that is attached to the transmission and popped it back on. We drove out and had the same problem. So we turned around and found a Dodge Dealership to get some help. After being told they couldn’t help because no was there that had experience with transmissions. (Was 10 minutes to 5:00) I put the truck in reverse to turn around and drove out, but this time the transmission worked just fine and we made it home to NC without another issue.
This has happened before and we had the high speed sensor and low speed sensors replaced at a transmission shop. I got codes this time, but don’t have them with me to post now. It only appears to happen when the vehicle has been idle for an extended period of time. After it cools down it runs perfectly fine.
Does anyone know what could be causing this and what I should do to fix before taking it to a dealer? I’m by no means a mechanic, but do know enough to be dangerous if it is a switch or sensor that I can replace easily.
Thanks in advance for your help.
