Clutch Fan Question
My 98 Durango keep making a noise like it was over reving I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the clutch fan was bad. I looked it up o youtube and it showed what it was but how can that be it. I am going to replace it my self but has anyone ever done it.
It's been done before. How does the clutch fan feel when you try to turn it by hand? Does it turn easily or does it have alot of resistance and stops by itself before it turns a quarter turn? When do you hear/feel the overrevving? In the morning on cold days? I'm asking these questions to help you narrow down the symptoms and hopefully save you some money and aggrevation. Does it feel loose when you try to wiggle it from side to side? I'm assuming your 98 is a 5.X L? Then you don't have the aux efan to deal with.
1) If it turns freely, you need to change it out cause it's bad. A good clutch fan should not turn mire than a quater turn when moved by hand.
2) On cold mornings, actually usually any morning, you'll feel/hear what sounds like a jet airplane taking off when you start the D. That's due to the viscuous fluid that's in the clutch fan assembly settling during the night and it needs to warm up to regain its viscosity so it can control the fan properly. After a while, the roaring goes away.
3) If you can wiggle the fan, then you have a bad assembly and it needs to be replaced or it'll crap out on you in the middle of the night while you're driving on the highway in the middle of the desert with no cell reception and it's freezing! Okay, bad example but you know what I mean. HTH.
