Default What's this in my rear end?

I couldn't resist the title...

Anyhow, what is the silver square in the bottom of the rear differential housing? See pic: http://i1030.photobucket.com/albums/...fferential.jpg

A *****.

I couldn't resist the reply...

That silver square is a magnet, any metal shavings from the gears get collected there so they don't circulate through the differential.

Now you've gone too far. (how could you resist the set up though, huh)

Anyhow, I assumed it was a magnet. It just didn't feel like metal, kind of soft. Maybe it was because of the fluid.

Thanks

Yep,

It's a magnet. From the look of the oil left in your diff it looked pretty good. So why did you open it anyway? Did you have an issue?
