Default 02 durango won't start

New guy here, but have been lurking a long time.
'02 Durango 4.7 4x4 123K miles.
2 weeks ago CEL came on and odometer displayed p0455 code.
Last weekend, replaced gas cap, cleared code, and a couple of days later CEL back on with same code.
Today I replaced the hoses from the evap cannister to engine compartment, and cleard code. Easy job right?
Now truck won't start. Strong gas smell under hood. Any ideas welcome. Kinda pressed for time, as I work midnights.
Thanks in advance Steve...

O.k., It finally started. Had been trying for the last 3 hours. When it did start, tach and speedo were pegged @ max RPM and 120 MPH, and ran REALLY rough. Lots of smoke/fumes of gas coming from exhaust, then it cleared. Tack retured to working order after about 30 seconds, but speedo is still pegged @ 120mph. Any ideas now?

Maybe a loose gas line? Hence the strong gas smell?

Update: Speedo returned to working order, after driving a few miles on my way to work this evening. But on my return trip home this morning, CEL back on with p0455 code again. ARGH! What else can be replaced on this EVAP system? If I had any hair left, I would pull it out!
By the way, I should have stated in first post that engine turned over, but wouldn't start.

the strong gas smell coupled with the fact that you have the evap leak code again makes me think that one of the lines you just replaced could have slipped off/gotten snagged and pulled off or something like that, but check ALL the lines for cracks/breaks/anything else out of the ordinary

After replacing all of the lines (pruchased from dealer), I have checked, re-checked, triple checked, and finally, quadruple checked, for correct installation, rips/tears, binds, cracks, and so on. Fairly easy install, zip tied hoses (loosely), so they wouldn't come too close to any heat, fire wall, obstruction, that would inhibit the flow of gas fumes. Is it possible that the purge valve/solenoid has gone bad? Evap canister seems intact, w/o any holes or cracks. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

yes that is a possibility, it is also possible (likely) that you have a bad gas cap if you havnt replaced it with a DEALER cap yet
