Engine Surging
I have a 1998 Dodge Durango 5.2L. It has about 105,000 miles on it. At about 102,000 miles i've been having problems with the engine surging. Here's how it started. Hopefully someone can help.
First I was having some hesitation while driving on the Highway at about 60-70 mph. The car would feel like it was jumpy or surging. I swithced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Still had same problem. Then I poured some Fuel Injector cleaner twice and still didn't solve them problem. Then shortly after that. The check engine light came on. Said #8 cylinder was misfiring. Then I swapped the #8 fuel injector witth the #6 and the check engine light since then has not come back on.
The problem has gone away on highway driving but now come on street driving. When i start off the line I get a surge at about 5-20 mph. On the freeway the car is fine. My mechanic said it's not the fuel injector cause he said if it was a bad injector it would till occur both on the freeway and on the street. He said the problem could be the throttle position sensor. He changed that and the problem still occurs. The check engine light has never reappeared. It seems to surge more when the car is cold but it does it when its been running for awhile too. Any suggestion or has this happened to anyone else??????

i had a similar problem that didn't cause the check engine light to come on on my 2000 4.7. it ended up being the throttle body. it's about a $60 part from dodge. did the trick- haven't had any issues since.

Are you sure it was the throttle body and not the sensor?? I called the dealership the throttle body is 270.00. Its ounds like they swith the sensor on yours. I have done the same already if it is.
sorry hitman, i'm an *** - thinking of the wrong truck and part this morning - it turned out to be the speed idle control. you can get to it right under the hood on the 4.7.
to get back at me, my check engine light actually went on on the way home tonight, ugh. thankfully, i found out that it's only the power steering switch.
