Red face tranny issues

ok its been awhile since i had an issue with the d. its 1 98d 5.2 engine auto . i noticed the problem about a week ago when i was on the highway. some jurk wouldnt let me into the lane to exit so his car being a crappy 4 cyl of course i just hit the gas alittle harder to pass. of course it sped up to about 75 then in a second it felt like if i was to slam the d into 2.this has never been an issue but i have never beated on it. now i went on the highway the next day to see if it did it again.speeding up slowly to 8o felt fine.it only did it if i put the petal to the floor .now me driving to work the other day not on highway the d had a weird shifting. like the 3rd gear would be really high before going into 4th. there were times where it wouldnt even go into 4th.
i checked fluids and it was low so i filled it up. the problem went away for about a couple of days.(except i didnt try the highway exercise).but now the shifting at times acts funny.im sure soon the tanny is gonna go which sucks cause i know its big bucks and i would just scrap it.but hoping its not.is there anything i could do to fix this or anything i can do to prolong the tranny as long as possible.???? i tried the lucas tranny and it seemed to work for a bit then issue came back..

try adjusting the TV cable to see if that helps the situation, the other thing is you might be due for a band adjustment in that transmission.
