Default '01 Infinity Speaker Issues

I bought my Durango with the back passenger speaker blown. I had my brother replace the blown Infinity (still have) with the Kenwood everyone says will work (I bought the pair).....Now, when I roll the back window down, it hits the speaker <cruuuuunch>, not to mention, it sounds like crap. When I direct the sound to right/back, you can barely hear a thing.

Fast forward to a few weeks later....Now, all the sudden, my right passenger speaker, all the sudden sounded blown. I have left it alone. It seems to have taken a personality of its own. It will be fine, then completley go out. Then, it decides to come back on, announcing itself with a loud, "POP" when I'm driving and scare the bejesus out of me (I have screamed at times).

Can someone PLEASE help me, this is driving me crazy! Thanks!!!!

if you bought shallow mount speakers they WILL sound like crap, you need to buy a new set of speakers (regular depth) and save the rings off the factory one in order to make them fit, this system is a 2 ohm system from the factory, if you put 4 ohm speakers in it will be much quieter than the 2 ohms, which you wont notice if you replace all of the speakers at once, but if you only replaced one(it sounds like you did) it will sound like crap

so the intermittent channel and popping noise is a speaker problem or an amplifier problem?

Yes, voice coils are bad.

My '99 Durango has the Infinity stereo system. All 4 of my mid/woofers (the 6.5" ones) were blown. The voice coils were fine. In my case, the foam surround(s) had disintegrated. The foam surround is the circular shaped flexible piece of foam that attaches the speaker cone to the speaker frame.

I was able to repair mine using kits from simplyspeakers.com. The kits have (2) foam surrounds each, and are ~$27.

It takes about 10 minutes to dissemble each door. It took about 30-45 minutes per speaker to cutaway the old surround, and (acetone) clean the glue residue from frame where the old surround attached. Once that's done, its only about 10 minutes of work per speaker to set the new foam surround with the provided rubber glue.

There was a post by a dodgeforum user Kensai that did the surround repair and took nice pictures. I cannot find it right now, but it was helpful.

So is the 2ohms system only for those that have the Infinity package?
