Looks like I need a radiator a couple of questions before I buy anything
A little background first I have a 98 SLT with a 360 and a towing package and the additional trans cooler that comes with that.
My question is when buying a radiator do I have to buy the one with the external cooler or can I reuse my stocker or possibly an aftermarket that is larger? Either option would be cheaper as long as the radiator does not come with the external cooler. I am not car stupid and can handle a little bit of extra work if that is what it takes.

You have 3 choices.
1. Get the regular OEM one that goes in it and be done.
2. Get the cheaper one without the cooler and install a bigger better cooler and re-pipe back to the trans. I believe the upper outlet is the cooled line from your radiator you tap into for the auxiliary trans cooler then out of the auxiliary cooler back to the trans.
3. Get the cheap one in and don't do the cooler and pay for the trans when it gets to hot when your towing.
On the #1 OEM option, the cooler braket is welded on to the radiator and that is what the auxiliary cooler is attached to. In this option the lines are already attached and fit for direct install. You get the best of both worlds but pay out extra $$$.
Personally, if you know what your doing then I would do the #2 option and you could even go to a hose shop and have them build the hoses for you. Get a nice big cooler.

Well considering the extra $200 in cost for the cooler equipped version I am leaning toward the second option as well. For that kind of cost I can have the bigger cooler and be better protected if I should decide to tow in the future.
