Now hydra that depends on which 5.9 were talking about here. Keep in mind the Cummins in our gen Ram is 5.9L displacement. LOL
I know this is way late but I got curious on the current numbers on the 4.7L. HERE I find its no longer offered in the Durango for 2011, but is in the Dakota and Ram 1500, it currently makes 310hp and 330lb-ft TQ with 14 city and 19 hwy. The even smaller 3.6L makes 290hp and 260lb-ft with 16 city and 22 hwy. Compare this to the 5.7 with 390hp and 407lb-ft and can achieve a 14 city and 20hwy.
my dad drives an 09 dakota w/ the new 4.7 (310 hp is NICE), its a very nice jump from driving my truck w/ the old 4.7 in it, you most certainly CAN tell the difference, and the throttle is alot touchier than mine (that may be the electronic control vs the cable on these trucks), and he gets 21 mpgs from it doing 70% highway driving to work and back in the summer and 18 int he winter.
Naw, a 5.9L would walk away from my Ram especially my old Durango. But if we got into a pulling war then mine would bring the house down......
As far as the Cummins, I think I would have preferred it, however I don't drive mine every day (maybe 1/4 mile to the store 3 times a week) to keep charge in the battery and things lubricated. I have a NGV, 2009 Honda Civic designated from my job, I put a lot of miles on a year and I don't have to pay for it. With the cold here and lack of driving it other than towing I went with the V-10 for my pulling, besides the fuel just doesn't cut if for any savings anymore as it used to. $3.35 a gal diesel and regular gas is $2.67 a gal. I don't see it changing anywhere down the road!!!! This is the reason I got rid of my 2002 GMC Duramax and went back to a classic gas 360 (5.9L) Durango (besides I could work on it and afford parts). Now if I drove it more, well I still don't know with the fuel prices the way they are.
Agreed. I also got rid of a 02 Duramax for my 00 Ram Dually. That was the worst motor to work on IMO and the Cummins is no gas 360, but its definitely easier than the Duramax hands down. The reason I said the Cummins being father because its been around for so damn long.
Also I do a lot of towing a driving and whenever I pull my 7,000 lb trailer in town I use my D, but when I'm towing my 16,000 lb 38' fifth wheel around the country I love that dually with the low end power of the Cummins.
Not to mention my old girl has 230,982 miles on her and she still runs like brand new. I definitely agree that for what you do go with a V10 with as little driving as you do but with as many miles as I put on, it only makes since for the Cummins.
