Default engine tick

The 4.7l has acquired a ticking noise on cold starts. is it bad that it makes that noise? i dont care much for the ticking im just curious if it means anything serious, so if not then i dont mind. ticking speed varies with engine rpm, sounds like valves or lifters. it goes away after the engine warms up. i use mobil one synthetic oil (in case you are wondering). and are there any ways to eliminate this noise?

thanks

is it only on the first start of the day and goes away after the oil pressure comes up (30 seconds or so??)

if so i have not yet seen a 4.7 that doesnt make the noise, its annoying, but not harmful, according to my parents mine has made it since the bought it, and almost every 4.7 on the dealer lot at the time made the noise when they went back to complain about it.

Check for a broken manifold bolt FIRST. Let us know when you find that was it.

If all fine, change oil a little more frequently.

4.7s do "slap" too much at start up IMHO.

Sounds to me like a carryover from the 5.2/318....once the oil gets warm and circulated it usually disappears.

+2Indy on checking for broken bolts though and more frequent oil changes.

Check your oil pressure might be your oil pump is weak during cold start after sitting overnight.

The 4.7l had this problem, +3 on the bolt thing. If nothing is wrong it is just valves and lifters that the oil ran off overnight and needs it put back on, hence why it goes away quickly. It was a poor anti-drain back design by dodge, but it does no harm it seems.
