Unhappy Transfer case hard to shift, keeps breaking linkage.

I bought this Durango a month ago, first Dodge I've ever had, and from the start I noticed it was a pain to shift in and out of 4wd and keeps pulling the gromits out. While it's not hard to replace the gromits it is a major pain when it get stuck in 2wd and there is a foot of snow, like today, what could be the cause of my transfer case being such a pain to shift?

Are you shifting while you are slightly rolling or while you are at a stand still?

For that matter, exactly how are you shifting?

Shifting both while moving and when motionless. For instance today I was pulling into a store and it suddenly popped into neutral and when i tried to put it back the linkage broke. You have to fight it to go into gear all the time, plus it sticks in 4wd and I have to work it to get it back in 2wd.

I'll give that a shot and see if it helps.

This has been the problem every time I've seen a transfer case that would "suddenly pop into neutral". That doesn't mean it necessarily is this time, but it's the first thing I'd check.
