Default 4X4 Trouble

Hi everyone. Just joined and wanted to pass this problem to all the brains out there. I have a 2002 Durango 4.7L, about 117000 miles on it, that will not switch into 4X4 normally. What I mean by that is if I need 4 wheel drive I must turn the ignition off, restart the car and switch to 4 wheel within a few seconds. To get it out do the same thing. Not fun living in Pittsburgh this time of year without 4X4 when you need it.

Welcome to the site. We did get a few inches in the last couple of days. I will move this thread to the first generation Durango section,

When you say doesn't lock into it normally what does this mean? What exactly does it do when you try to put it in 4WD?

It does nothing but stay in 2 wheel, even though I have moved the switch to 4 wheel. It will only switch back and forth between 2 and 4 if I turn the car off and switch it with approx a 2 second timespan. Basically if I am driving in 4 wheel and want to switch to 2 I have to stop turn off the ignition, restart and switch it within 2 seconds.
