weird sputtering sound coming from engine of 01 durango r/t 5.9
So a couple days ago i came out to start my 01 d 5.9 r/t and i noticed a weird sputtering sound coming from the engine compartment. I work in the car audio industry and know very little about what that sound could be so sorry if i am asking a stupid question but does anyone know what it could possibly be. Usually only lasts for about 10 minutes right after i start it and gets pretty loud. The sound is going the tempo of the idle and sounds like it might have something to do with my injectors. The tempo of the sound gets faster when i give it some gas too. I've also noticed that it gets up and goes sometimes and then if i park it and come out an hour later it has NO *****, so thats what led me to believe it might have something to do with the injectors. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
Last time I heard this sound from my 5.9 D, it dropped a valve and required a complete top-end rebuild. Take a paper towel and hold the end of it the exhaust tip, if it sucks the towel into the exhaust tip during idle, that's your problem.
@l7d4n i tried your trick and it didn't suck the paper towel in. so thats hopefully some good news, i dont really feel up to do a complete top-end rebuild. I just hope its something relatively cheap to fix or replace. It doesn't happen every time i start it, theres no rhyme or reason to it. Thanks
My best bet is the garden hose listening device. About 3 feet will do. Just listen around to pin point it. By the way i need some radio advice on my 01. I have heard of pcv valve making noises but not the loss of power. Might have to check fuel psi. If pump is failing injectors make noise AND loss of power?
@justfrfun A mechanic left a mehanics stethoscope under my hood one time and so i have that to use so thanks for the advice. For a bluetooth deck i would recommend any bluetooth deck from kenwood. Does she have an ipod? If you want to gradually build a stereo i would start with a kenwood excelon model so you get 3-4 volt sets of rca preouts ;2 for a 4 channel and 1 for a sub amp. If your not looking to get into a full system then a non-excelon model will do just fine. I personally find kenwood to be the most user friendly on the market and they also have the highest continuous watts output on the market which is nice if you dont want to add a 4 channel amp. As far as speakers go, Does she have the infinity system? If so you'll need to bypass that amplifier which is located in the passenger kick panel. I would recommend Kenwood excelon, Focal Polyglass, or Focal Access. Components in the front and coaxial s in the back will not dissapoint you or your wife. If you need any more info or recommendations, feel free to ask.

As i was investigating i did notice what looked like oil leaking around the seal of a valve cover. If that gasket was blown could that cause the sound or lack of power?
No,
But what I want you to do is replace your oil with Mobil One Fully Synthetic 10W-30 and use a Bosch oil filter. With temps down that low you should be using it! It very well could be the temps and using conventional oil. Conventional oil at those temps would cause the motor to run dry on the top end as the oil becomes like a chewy candy.
Mobil One Fully Synthetic 10W-30 is formulated to run like water even down to -56 F conquering the issue first hand! You can pick up a 5qt container at Wal-mart for like $24 bucks right now and a Bosch filter for like $5 so a change at under $30 bucks.
