side exit exhaust laws
Does anybody Know if its legal in Massachusetts to have your exhaust out the side of your vehicle before the rear tire? I've been looking online and can't find anything about it.
I didnt think it was legal but here it is in writing.....even if it was it isnt very smart...you run the risk of passengers getting burned on the hot exhaust getting in the doors. Dont do it dude!!

(5) Muffler and Exhaust System. Accelerate motor to test for prevention of unnecessary noise and emission of any unreasonable amount of smoke. The exhaust system, exhaust manifold(s), exhaust pipe(s), muffler(s), and tailpipe(s), if designed to be so equipped, shall be tight and free of leaks. System components shall be securely fastened with fasteners in place and undamaged. All motor vehicle exhaust systems shall discharge the exhaust beyond operator, passenger, and/or trunk compartment. Unnecessary noise is herein defined as any noise which is louder than that emitted by the vehicle when equipped with the original manufacturer's equipment. A gas or diesel vehicle will be rejected if, at normal operating temperature, at any constant speed over 15 MPH, (approximately 1,000 to 1,200 RPM's) visible black or blue exhaust emissions are evident.

Well, one thing about having it come out the side is if you want to get rid of the cat or dog you place the cage next to the exhaust pipe and start the truck and simply "forget" about them for a while.
OK, speaking from experience (and stupidity!) here.
I actually did this *stock* on my Mustang as a Shelby "R" model mod, with the pipes coming out just behind the door post. Looked really cool, sounded great (from the outside about 50 feet away)
Things you don't consider:
It's LOUD inside the car!
Those freakin' pipes get HOT! (still have burn marks on my ankles)
The exhaust WILL stain the paint.
Don't ever plan on opening a window again unless your doing 50+ or wearing a respirator.
It lasted about a month before i finally agreed with my wife..... it *was* a bad idea.

i followed what all you guys said and went ahead and left it where it was. the reason i asked was because i put on a new muffler and its smaller than a regular one so i would of had to make the tailpipe longer to make it stay where it is and didnt feel like doing it. but i did and dont regret it. thanks for the input everyone

I'd also worry about the heat generated from the exhaust being that close to the tires and possibly causing a bad ending to the story...
Good to know you just kept it exiting thru the rear though, most likely the smarted decision.
