Default ABS question

Hello all,

Have searched and read all the threads here but still have a question;

(1998 Durango SLT 5.2 4WD w/ 2 wheel ABS)

My ABS and BRAKE lights on the dash will sometime light and stay lit, then go off...I don't think it's the sensor on the diff because the speedo works fine all the time.

My mechanic noticed it when he fixed the rear end and he said is the CAB, control unit for the ABS, he also thought it might be hard to find and reprogram.

Any thoughts? Should I be looking at anything else, or is the CAB the likely culprit, and do you have any estimates/recommendations, is it cheaper/better to get it repaired (there is a place called ATE that will rebuild it for $99 and it won't have to be reprogammed)? Thanks!!

if its an intermittent problem, and goes off again once you the shut the truck off my first check would be brake fluid reservoir, however the rwabs sensor (on top of the diff), as well as the output speed sensor on the drivers side of the transmission, and the computer control for it could all be culprits. in my experience when the control module goes bad, the light stays on

Shrp nailed it! Whenever I see this I start with the speed sensor on the transmission because it's the cheaper of the 2.

If you do need to replace the ABS Module, you can get one from a junk yard. If you do this, you need to find a Durango of the same year and same braking set up, yours is a 2 wheel ABS so you would need to find a junker "1998 Durango 4WD w/ 2 wheel ABS." Engine size should not matter. The 1998 only came in 4X4.

If you can find one it should be a direct swap without any flash needed.

And plus, to add to hydra the 5.2 and 5.9 are all in the same family and share the same block pretty much. Just make sure its 2-wheel ABS.

a unit from a donor vehicle 1998 Durango 4WD Rear Wheel ABS. So...I should be able to swap out the unit without having to reprogram it as the factory service manual implies? That would be nice...thanks!

Yes it should just be as simple as Plug-n-Play. Make sure that it's working fine by hitting the brakes in a puddle or something because the last thing you want is it to be jerking around your brakes when you don't want it to.

Yes, plug and play as long as it is the same system, year, and type.
