Trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd
Just chiming in with a little voice of experience here...
DON'T DRIVE IT UNTIL YOU GET IT FIXED!
My tranny problems started with those exact symptoms, but out of necessity I drove it to work for 3 more days after the problem started. It's now parked in my back driveway waiting for me to save up $1200 for a replacement tranny instead of the $200 worth of parts I could have gotten it done for.
Having said that, it's entirely possible that your identical symptoms have an entirely different cause and driving it won't hurt anything. Modern automatic transmissions are complex, have a lot of sensors and other things that can go bad but produce very similar symptoms.
But these things are expensive to replace if you do happen to tear it up. My advice would be to do yourself a favor and get the D into a tranny shop so you can get an expert, hands-on diagnosis. Depending on where you live, you might find that a replacement tranny plus installation costs almost as much as jumping on craigslist and just getting a replacement Durango.
Did I mention that transmissions are really ****ing expensive? Just when I was starting to love my 98 D for how reasonable parts were to buy... LOL....

I second what coreybv says. Get it to somebody to look at. My trans was doing the same thing as well. Took it in for a diagnostic and turned out to be a broken front band and band strut. I drove it for 2 days after the initial problem started. Cost me $700 for the repair. The trans shop said if I kept driving it I could have been looking at a total rebuild at a cost of anywhere up to $2300.
I would change the fluid and filters and just for ****s and grins get the output spped sensor $30 bucks from o'reillys. I Bought my durango and it had the problems yours has and thats all it was I was able to talk the lady down two grand because she thought the tranny was bad. an hours worth of work and problem solved. Every issue I have had with My truck I have found a fix on here and it has saved me a ton of cash.
