I agree with you about 95%. I would still highly recommend making sure your tires can handle snow/ice. Just because Cali is warm, doesn't mean you can't get snow.

Also, living in San Jose, you don't have to worry about tires for ice and snow like many of us living in the frozen north!

But I agree with many others - if money is tight, tire shops do sell good used tires. They don't advertise it because they prefer to sell new.

Also, I always do a 5 tire rotation. The spare goes on the rear left. Doing it this way, I got 80,000 miles from my Toyo AT tires - that's 64k per tire I now have Michellin LTX M/S which are pricey, but far more comfortable on the road.

not a good idea if you have a 4x4, having tires that are different diameters (yes even just being at different points in their life is sometimes enough) puts extra strain on your t-case every time you use the 4wd, and also puts extra strain on your differential in the rear 4 tire rotation is more than enough.

what we do is every time we get new tires we take the best tire of the 5 and have it mounted as the spare, and put 4 brand new tires on the truck, besides most tire shops wont sell an odd number of tires IME

Since when? Tire shops around here will sell you one tire and let you carry it out strapped to your back if you have money to spend...

Every now and then I hear something that makes me grateful that I live out in the boonies. This is one of those times.
