i got a 2001 dodge durango 4.7 v8 and i just had my heads rebuilt because of a tapping noise i got them back and put them back on. i went to start it up and the tapping noise was still there. it sounds like its coming from cylinder 8 on the passenger side. the machine shop now has my truck and they said its not a lifter or any valves...any help on this on? i have no idea and im stumped

Well you have the 4.7 with an OHC so I can't help you there because I have the 5.2L but it has to be something loose in the valvetrain, with the covers off spin the crankshaft really slowly through a cycle and check often or have someone check any part of the valvetrain for being loose, that will give you a tapping noise for sure.

does the sound go away after a minute or two? might be the normal startup tick that the 4.7 has

no the noise does not go away. some one told me its could possably be a bearing in the head..if that is the case about how much should that be to fix?

A bearing in the head? Did that same guy tell you to check your highlight fluid too? haha actually I believe he was refering to the camshaft bearing, which sometimes could be the case but more than likely it's a loose valve or rocker that's tapping, but if it's not, then next on the list would be the bearings.
