Default Trany noise

Hello all I am new to the forum and new to dodge.

I recently picked up an 2000 D with the 5.9 the trany was not shifting well. I changed the output speed sensor and it shifted but then would not go into park. Then it went in to park and would only start in Neutral. Had a trany shop drop the pan and found that the metal piece (forgot the name) had come off.
He replaced it and did the band adjustments now it shifts great BUT there is a awful sound that I can only describe as a raping or clacking sound that is loud in park none existent in reverse and neutral a little less loud in drive. And before we did all the repairs
I could only hear it slightly only in park.
I used the search function but could not find anything on this one.

Any Ideas? Or help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks John

It sounds to me like you have a piece of metal stuck in the system, either that or the bands were adjusted incorrectly.

What exactly does a "raping sound" sound like?

I would call it a loud clicking almost like pin slipping over a gear but louder... now its back to only doing it in park.

It sounds like a bearing in there then. I'd check the output bearings because if it's only there while you're in Park then it's likely not a band issue.

Ok I found the noise to be the flex plate or the converter not sure witch.
All the converter bolts are tight so I am going to check the flex plate.
Any one know were I can get one?

thanks John

I think if it were the flex plate, the noise would be there regardless of gear position and frequency would be directly proportional to engine rpm since it is bolted to the crank.

Engine rpms ARE directly affected by the tranny being in neutral/park or drive so it is possible this is the problem.

Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I got it done today but not with out a few surprises.
The good news is it was the flex plate. The bad is some time in this Durango’s past the engine was changed from a5.9 to a 5.2 so the flex plate that I picked up was the wrong one and had to go on the hunt for the correct one. Long story short she is up and running with no noises….!!!!!!!!! And in one day ..

Thanks again for the help..

John
