Steering Shaft Question
Aha... starting to make sense now. The style of the shaft must've changed sometime between your truck (1998?) and mine (2003). My upper & lower joint ends are identical, however they're not splined like that. They're square with a half moon shape 180 degrees apart, so the shaft will only fit in two different positions. The rest of the shaft looks similar, but it's *not* pressed together anywhere that I can see. Welded maybe, but not pressed.
Still going back to the fact that it's probably not worth rebuilding these things anyways. Mine was ~$110 or so online, I think the dealer price is $180 or so. Finding u-joints and making them work isn't worth the time or money.
*EDIT*
I looked at the pictures again and the little light bulb finally clicked on that you're talking about pressing the BEARING CAPS out of the YOKE. I was thinking of complete u-joint ASSEMBLIES. Yeah, I doubt that you'd get the bearing caps to press out easily, they're staked in place tightly. I'd bet that the yokes would distort easily.

In 2000 they switched to a R&P steering type which is probably where they switched to a diffrent shaft.
Dealer wanted $320 for a new one for mine. I've personally tried every option besides cutting the shaft and welding on another shaft with a good u-joint. After all is said and done it's better just to buy a new shaft.

I need to replace mine, should I go this route? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT
It's cheaper than the factory, maybe I'll send mine to Borgeson and have it rebuilt.
