Smile Girl + 2000 Durango = Confusion

Hi there, glad I found this forum.

Purchased a 2000 Durango from a friend knowing full well we (17 yr old daughter & I) would have to put work into it. (tires, intermediate steering shaft & a rotor.. big deal).

Can you help me find....

the thread re: battery dies overnight? I was reading it, copied some of it.. then tried to reset the security alarm - and the thread disappeared by the time I returned in the house; definition = beagle laid his damn mush on my keyboard. The Durango (or "beast of joy" as my 17 yr old calls it as it is her first car "spoiled")... was great.. til it wouldn't start yesterday a.m. Another friend's hubby through in a battery they had.. fired right up. Went to store leaving "teen Princess" in Durango to keep charging battery; went to store later that night w/no problem.. and again this a.m... no charge.. course the security alarm went off for no reason (did I mention I didn't even KNOW it had a security alarm? hey I told her to read the manual; it's not MY car)....

So, now that I've broken the first rule (post in appropriate thread/column), I'll continue to try and find the thread regarding our dilemma above.

I'm thinking I may be making friends here sooner than later, and will be a permanent fixture here as well.

In other words, GLAD I / WE FOUND YOU!

A Single Mom who wishes she took shop vs. Typing and her 17 yr old Princess

sounds to me like you have a drain on the system assuming you didnt use the truck btwn charging the battery and it not starting again, what i suggest you do is get an digital volt meter, set it to current, and put it on the battery cable, then start pulling fuses till the current draw drops considerably, then you will know where to look for a bad/frayed wire, a short, or a bad electronic module (there should be some minimal current draw to keep the radio presets alive and for the remote locks to work, but it should not be a whole lot)

Glove box, ashtray, rear hatch, overhead... any of those courtesy lights can be stuck on and causing a drain overnight.

Assuming it is a light... in a very dark garage... sit and look around for the culprit. It should stick out like a sore thumb. Find it and we can go from there.

Can't follow the way the questions are written.....I'm sorry

Can you please re-write each of the problems and explain each issue clear and concise?

Like shrp said use a voltmeter and pull fuses to check for where the drain is coming from. If you're tired of a dead battery simply unplug it whenever you're not using it to prevent further drain and possible problems with prematurely killing the battery.

Also when you say you didn't know it had a security system, is it like a remote start system or is it look like a barebone stock alarm system. If it is an aftermarket alarm system this would be the first place I'd look because they are famous for causing worlds of problems on the vehicle, a battery drain being the number one issue.
