Default 2001 4.7 4x4 Transmission Question

When I drive with my truck in "D" it feels like it is in second gear. I have tried moving the gear selector back and forth, but no luck. This problem has been going on now about two weeks. Is there anything I can check. Thanks in advance. -M

P.S. I have checked the transmission fluid and it looks nice and red and there is no smell and it is at the proper level. My truck has 120000 miles .

So it's "stuck" in a certain gear all the time? Most of the time this happens it is actually stuck in 3rd gear, and this is called "Limp Mode". It could be your TCCM or a transmission issue. You will have to have the Transmission Codes read from the TCCM to figure out why. There can be codes in it and not on the PCM so no engine codes will be triggered. You might have to take it to a dealer or shop that has that type of reader.

Take it to a dealership to get that code checked out unless you have a very reputable mechanic with a DRB scanner. It's likely if you take it to Firestone Complete Auto or Midas they'll give you some line of everything you need.

Most likely if it's sending it into limp mode and your fluid is fine then you have a weak or dead clutch pack. Just my opinion...

It turns out that my problem was not the transmission, but a bad clutch fan. What I thought was my gear being stuck was just the noise from the clutch fan. It sounded like an airplane taking off under the hood. It was particularly loud in the morning when I would start it up. It cost me $151 to have the clutch fan replaced at the dealership....and now my truck rides like a dream. It is so quiet I can't believe it. Thanks for all the input. I hope by my posting the solution will help someone else in the future. -M

I took mine off completely. I have had 0 problems in 100+ degree weather so far but I haven't gotten stuck in stand still traffic. I like the way it revs and I can hear my engine better too.

What engine RPM is that fan supposed to cut out at anyway? Mine keeps running til the engine gets to about 3000 RPM, then it cuts off.

I don't know, I left mine on for the majority of the winter and it was on until about 45mph, then shut off. It would then re engage if I came to a complete stop. I don't know if the cold wind was causing it to re engage but I just removed it completely.
