High Milleage?

High Milleage?
i have been looking at getting a durango and then i finally found one. they wanted originally $3500 for it and i got them down to $2000. Its a 98' slt 5.2l v8. I absolutely love it! the only thing im worried about is that it has 190,000 miles. is this a rip off? or are durangos pretty good with high milleage? im new at this whole buying a car thing since ive only had one car and im about to sell it. ANY information would help.

$2000 for a car 190k miles on it? id be wary of it, especially if there are anything less than perfect maintenance records for the truck. The engines in these trucks do tend to last very well, we have a couple of members with over 200k i think indy has over 250k, and i have seen reports of these engines having over 300k miles w/o a rebuild. however for 2k dollars if you have to go and put a new engine or trans in it in the next year or so is not a good deal.
what im trying to say (spark notes version) make sure you have it checked out and that you see all maintenance records to go with the truck.

+1. $2k on 190,000 miles for a 5.2 & a 1998 is just too much. The 98/99 has their own set of issues that could make that a costly investment overall without a nice service history to go with it. I know of a great 99 5.2 with 275,000 miles, however that is a rarity. Offer then $1200 and cross your fingers that's a good buy.
I tend to suggest dumping a chuck of cash into immediate service work (trans, diffs, tune up, hoses, AC service) anytime you buy a used auto. That pushes you well past a $2000 investment even with a $1200 acquisition cost.
If you were to move up to a 2000 or better, the early idiosyncrasies wouldn't apply and I wouldn't be as concerned about the 190k already on there.
SS, mine '00 has 227k miles so far however I can assure everyone they haven't been allowed to wear down any parts on my D. You'll get to see what left in her at Carlisle is 6 weeks.
