Default Tick/knock in the Engine, P0203, P0208, P0301, P0308

Hey everyone, I hope one of you or hopefully more can help me with this problem. I have 2002 Durango V8 4.7 with 114K miles. It was given to me but there is a knock, or tick in the engine, the sound seems to from on the passengers side of the engine, closest to cylinder 8. I got the codes from it and I got P0203, P0208, P0301, P0308. I know what the codes read I just do not have any idea how I would fix this nor if the codes and the knock/tick are related.

I changed the spark plugs and did an oil change with Lucas and flush. I noticed that out of all the spark plugs, number 8 was the dirtiest of all. The car actually does not run too bad, only the ticking or knocking is pretty annoying and I am sure it wont run much longer like that.

Any help would be very appreciated, my main concern is getting rid of the knocking/ticking. Thanks I will wait for your answers.

lucas oil treatment was a bad idea, as are all oil additives, unregulated and often causing more harm than any good that they do, the modern equivalent of snake oil, if you want to use one, the only one i would think of is seafoam, it can be used 3 ways, in the gas tank for fuel system and injectors, in the oil (a couple hundred miles before a change) and burned through a vacuum line (usually the brake booster).

to start with i would swap the injectors from 3 and 8 to different cylinders which are NOT throwing code (put 3 on 1 and 8 on 6 for example) and see if the codes follow the injectors, if they do, buy new injectors.

which spark plugs did you use? if you used anything but champion copper core plugs you did it wrong, change them again and make sure to gap to .040 before installing (no spark plugs do not come pre-gapped, alot of times you get lucky, but thats no reason not to check it before installing)

Thanks a lot for your fast reply. Well I did the Lucas only because a lot of people recommended it, I didn't know it could do harm , I really hope not. As far as using seafom in the gas tank, just put it straight in there and do what? Same with in the break booster vacuum line? Sorry, kind of a rook here. You think doing this might help with the knock/ticking?

I will try switching the injectros and see what happens, will keep you posted.

By the way, I did use champion spark plugs and gapped to .040 myself.

I been reading a lot here and have seen someone say that it could be the manifold, and that changing is very likely to take the tick/knock away, what are your thoughts on that

seafoam is poured into the tank and then i suggest getting gas right away to mix it in better.

to put it into the vacuum line you have someone hold the throttle open for you and you just slowly stick the hose into the can (maybe 1/3 to 1/2 a can) and the truck will smoke like crazy, but it burns all of the impurities and carbon build up out of the cylinders, it can sometimes help.

i have never heard of a manifold gasket being a problem spot on the 4.7, on the 5.2/5.9 the plenum is a problem but NOT the 4.7

I have never heard of an intake gasket being a problem either. First and foremost I would pull plug #8 (I know it's got to be the hardest one to get) and see what it looks like because you're likely to find a fouled plug. As for flushing the engine, that was a bad idea and honestly you might want to do a compression test because it could be with that flush you might have blown a piston ring.

Thanks guys I am going to try the seafom and see where that gets me. I will take it from there depending on the results. Will keep you posted. Thinking of perhaps recording a video to see if someone has heard that noise in the past. We will see. Thanks again

Could have dropped a seat. I would pull the valve cover off and have a look.

I did the seafoam and No luck . I bought a stethoscope to see where the noise came out of, the injectors all sound the same, the ticking noise comes from within the engine by the 8th spark plug, sounds like something is loose in there and tapping metal. I am running out of options and I am not too comfortable taking the engine apart, looks like I am going to have to bring a mechanic to take a look at it, that probably just means that i will have to pay a good amount of money.

Good call hydra.

If it sounds like it's coming from the rear cylinder your best bet is going to be to pull the valve covers and see if a valve has dropped a seat because it's definitely what it sounds like to me...
