Tire questions from the Brit (with no idea)
Okay this is probably going to be a stupid question ... but things are slighty different to what I am used to.
The first question is tire size. On the D I have 31x10.50R 15LT
I am used to the metric sizing and using a converter this seems to be 267/76/15. Is there a particular reason to use one size over the other?
The next question is on tire compostion. The tires fitted are Dominator A/S M&S. Now being from the UK generally all the tires are all season. Can someone tell me if these tires are suitable for use in a Salt Lake summer?
I was thinking about replacing them with summer tires and keeping them for winter, but then I have read that as there are no official standards for A/S and M&S tires they are a compromise that may not work well in the winter here either!
As I am working on a tight budget at the moment I am not sure which is the best way to go.
Sorry if these are simple questions for someone who knows....
Thanks

i believe the stock tire size is actually 265/75/15 for your truck, the tire size doesnt matter except that if you change the tire size you change the speedometer and trip meter reading, they will no longer be correct if you change from the stock tire size (unless you have the truck reprogrammed)
the tires on the truck look e to me (from a quick google search) to be a pretty good tire for all around driving, looking at the tread pattern it should work just fine in the snow, and will drive just fine in the summer, no need to replace them unless they are worn out.
just FYI M&S means mud and snow, its a tire that is rated on how well it performs in adverse conditions.

The 1998 durango had 31x10.50r15 or 235/75r15, that what my owners manual says. My uncle has a 2002 but they had 265/70r16 or the 235/75r15. I prefer 31x10.50's but they are not a popular anymore, at least in ND. Your tires will be fine for salt lake weather, like shrpshtr325 said stay with the same tire size to keep your speedo on.

For the record, if you take it to a dealership or somewhere like tire kingdom you can get the speedometer recalibrated for cheap and quickly. As for finding the factory tire size, there is a sticker on the driver door (IIRC, it's on the VIN sticker) and it tells you the size your vehicle came with from the factory.
My Durango has the 31x10.5's and my speedo is EXACT, I've never been in a vehicle where the speedo is so precise. I verified my speed using my GPS, and exactly what the needle says in the dash is exactly what my GPS says.
Are you talking about Salt Lake City, UTAH?

Yup SLC Utah. Moved here in the hope of having more chance of finding work.
Thanks to everyone who replied, I will keep the tires as they are.
Thanks

Well i can help ya out there as I've lived in SLC, Utah for many years and a few other places around 100 miles of it.
All I run are A/T tires in all weather here on my trucks. The Dominator tires you have will work just fine in all weather conditions. Now I prefer a more aggressive tire like the BFG KO series, but I tow, go off road, and drive in snow even in the mountains.
Right now I am trying out some Uniroyal Liberators and so far they have been pretty good for a cheap price ($700) out the door at Walmart, but I will never buy tires from Walmart again because the take forever to get it rotated and balanced.
I just bought a set of Arizona Silver Edition tires for my 2004 Taurus as they hold up great for a car tire and have great traction for all weather conditions here in Utah. I usually get all my tires from Discount Tire as they seem to have good pricing and they get you in and out quickly.
Now a 31 X 10.5 X 15 are going to be easier to find and are a cheaper tire because the metric version aren't used as much in that size around these parts. Besides, a 31 is most likely what you have as a spare anyway and should have came stock on your rig as it sounds.

Hi and thank you for the local advice!
I dont plan on doing any off roading, at least not while this is our only car, but we will be making regular trips down to Colorado including through the winter so I will see how things go. I will keep your recomendations in mind.
Thanks
Andy
