Question Mirror, mirror, what the hell--help!

Is it possible to replace JUST THE MIRROR on a Dodge Durango 1999 driver's side without replacing the entire mirror casing and taking the door cover off? I have unheated power mirrors, one which was cracked on the driver's side. I would like to replace the mirror itself without replacing the entire mirror casing. Is that possible, and how is the mirror removed to do it? Thanks, I haven't seen any threads that cover this.

AFAIK, you have to replace the whole think on the OEM ones... however, they do make aftermarket ones where just the mirror pops out.

People have replaced just the glass and you can get it at the dealer. I think they just pop out but lining them up is a b!tch. I popped one out at the junk yard a few weeks ago just to see. There are 2 wires that attach defrost mirrors is equipped. The power motor is behind the glass.

I accidentally broke the passenger side mirror glass, and was able to buy just the glass panel from the dealer, but I have the large heated mirrors, but I would suspect this is true for all of them.

Yes you can buy just the glass whether it's heated or not because the heated element is in the housing itself and has nothing to do with the glass.

The heater on mine is in the plastic back on the mirror. The glass panel comes with the plastic back plate on it that snaps onto the tilt motor bracket in the housing. To take it out all I did was get my fingers behind the mirror panel and pull it out of the housing slowly and it un-snaps. Then the new one you just line it up and push it back in and it snaps in. Then if the mirror is heated the wires connect to the back of the mirror. At least as far as I know, they don't come as just a piece of glass, all of the ones I have seen had the plastic back.

Talking Dastardly deed is done

Thanks for your help everyone. I've never been left hanging here for an answer to a question. Two fingernails, a small amount of blood and a few curse words still hanging in the air somewhere over Lake Michigan, and it is done. The black frame casing DOES pop out after some careful prying, and snaps back in after the old cracked mirror is removed in pieces. It's a bit of a pain to remove because the entire original mirror is backed with 2-sided sticky (very) tape, but the total cost was about $10, as opposed to $125 at the dealership. Dodge Forum rocks!
