durango stalled at stop, then fired right up. month later stalled while driving/actually cut out then back on a few times while moving then stalled out totally. ten minutes on side of freeway and it fired up again. tonight it shut off driving home and seems the thing is not recognizing charge in battery, it cranks over but says battery only has 8v, then out of nowhere it says it has 14v and starts right up. drive a mile and dies, i sit there for a few minutes turning key(not all the way) till voltage is up and manage to get home. battery is not even year old-3rd battery in 3 years. battery is getting tested tomorrow after work, is there any sensor or other piece on the fritz i should check?

p.s. durango has 241,000 miles and has been a champ
rebuilt tranny,new water pump,heater core,several bearing hubs,fuel pump, and the batteries. not bad for 3,500 miles a month

 

Great to see that your car is running fine. I guess the major overhaul was in the betterment of your car. 3500 miles a month is excellent.

 

next time the truck shuts off on you try putting a sealed bag of ice on the PCM and see if it fires up, the PCMS on dark colored trucks from 98-00 are known to go bad in that they overheat and shut off, if the bag of ice fixes it then you will unfortunately need a new PCM

What controls the alternator is a positive wire from the PCM. If that wire is bad or the PCM is bad that would cause the alternator not to produce the correct volts. However there is also a bad alternator, but you would run off the battery tell it was drawn down. But in your case, it starts right back up again so it sounds like the battery is up to charge enough that it could run the system. So again I would look at the PCM.
