Front end Whine
your reasoning is sound, however life doesnt always work the way we think it should, nor does it always work out the same, i tend to prefer replacing the wheel bearings in pairs bc if one is gone my reasoning is that the other isnt far behind it.
You can look for obvious rub marks on the CV drive shaft and also check the boots. With the noise changing/going away with turns you may also have a bad outer CV joint...sharps right though, items like hubs, bearings, etc should be replaced in pairs...
I only replaced the driver's side hub.
The hub I figured to be bad is on the driver's side. When going 30 plus mph with the wheels straight, you can hear the whine. If you turn the wheels to the passenger side (right side), the while is louder... if you turn the wheels to the left (driver's side) then the while almost goes away.

See sound can bounce off of things, as well as it moved sides. I would replace both sides and get the tires looked at for nails and other.
A little story,
Last year my 2004 Taurus was making a wheel bearing sound, I even rode in the back to confirm. It was the pass rear wheel bearing. So I ordered a new one and when it came in I installed it. Same problem? So I removed the drivers pass side and swapped it with the one off the pass side. Same problem???????
So now I'm gettin drunk and pissed off! WTF is going on I think????? I knew there was a nail broke off in the tire but it wasn't even touching the road! So I came to the conclusion that even though I knew that wasn't it, I would wait until after work and take the car in the next day. Well they repaired the tire and showed me the 1/2 nail, and yep I was right, it was a broke off nail, but it was well away from the road surface. I get into it and drive and guess what, sound gone. What I figure is when I would drive it the nail inside the tire would vibrate and hum?
What I am getting at is, don't count out the small things when your looking at a large problem, they could be the things that need attention.

I had a sound, not quite like yours..more of a hum or faint grind that changed with speed. My mechanic and I first expected it was the front right wheel bearing but while driving it became hard to determine which side..thats when we found out the splines on the front driveshaft were shot. Replaced that and we're good.
