Hitting Rev limiter
I have a problem with my 02 R/T. When I jump on the throttle the truck hits the rev limiter before it will upshift. It stays there until I let off the gas. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
My 00 R/T does this also but only sometimes, but getting more frequent. This is between 2nd and 3rd gear I think. It'll rev and at the upper RPM band, I can tell it revv'ed to redline really faast because the tranny slipped to neutral between gear change but never made the change to 3rd gear. I had to let off the gas to get the tranny to change to 3rd gear. But it shifts fine if you manually shift the tranny from 1-OD.
Hopefully someone can have an answer for this.

Sounds to me like you guys need a full trans service. Have the belts tightened and fluid pressure upped. If you really want performance out of it then why not throw in a shift kit. I have a B&M in mine because I like the street performance and the way it shifts and I'm all smiles.[sm=gears.gif] If you want to tow with it Transgo is the shift kit you want.
I just got my 2nd tranny fluid changed out at 60k. The fluids and all that checked out. I remember a couple years ago while my D was still under warranty, the tranny locked up on 2nd gear and will not shift to 3rd gear. This also caused the check engine light to come on. Had it towed to the dealership and they found the governor actuator switches were shot. So I am curious if the actuators are shot or going to be shot again as this time I do not have a check engine light come on. This problem only occurs under FULL THROTTLE pedal to the metal. Otherwise, it shifts fine under normal driving conditions. I wonder if this relates to my torque management problem when idling at low rpm's from another thread??? Will have to have my governor actuator switches checked.
I also check and I do not think the 2000 and newer Durango's have the tranny speed sensor on either the input or output. Autozone cannot come up with a part number for 2000, but it does have them for 1998 and 1999 models. Also look at NAPA and Carquest and they don't show it either. So could the governor actuators be the replacement part for the sensors?

I doubt that it is the fluid or the bands. This has done this since it had 20,000 miles on it. It just hit 32,800 and is still doing it. I played it off as a fluke incident the first time. Then it did it again, and it just did it again on Fri. The trans shifts tight and firm and the truck has been babied...... it is my wifes vehicle. She drives pretty consertavely unless she feels the need to smoke a mustang every now and then! It has never happened to her while she was driving but it has happened while she was riding in the vehicle. As far as shift kits go..... I have an Expedition with a 5.4 in it. It has a 40 series Flowmaster exhaust, K&N FIPK, Hypertech chip and a B&M electronic shift kit in it. It shifts firm and hard and is pretty quick considering it weighs almost 7000 lbs! She doesn't like how hard the Ex shifts but I also don't want to hit the rev limiter in the D every time I jump on the throttle!
The 2000s most certainly do have the input output speed sensor. I t was confirmed for me on Friday and I will be having mine replaced next week. Sounds very much like some of the symptoms I'm seeing, but it hasn't become a problem yet. have the dealer do the speed sensor if you can't get one yourself.

What does it to in terms of performance?==== It makes your trans shift harder and faster without the slippage that comes stalk. Remember that the dealership wants you to buy a new car every 100K miles, they got to make money. You can decide how hard you want it to shift with replacement springs that it comes with. It also makes your trans last longer buy far and work less. You will be very happy I promise.
Does the transgo kit also give you some performance as well as towing compared to the B&M kit?==== Yes, transgo is more for towing and good all around. I don't use my truck for towing very often and when I do I like the fact that it is there it helps out so much if I need it. When I throw it in tow mode my B&M hits hard and fast with no loss of power. The fact is that there are slippage plates in your trans and they slip on them the shift kits help minimize the slippage therefor makes your trans last longer and run cooler. I can break my tires loose on dry pavement on strait take off and chirp them at the shifts!
Yes your tranny has a speed sensor. This is what tells the PMC when to shift your trans. It could very well be your problem
The transgo kit would be the best choise in my book for your driving style. I just wanted strait up street performance.

Cool beanies then! I'll have to call the dealer to get the input/output sensors to see if it eliminates the slip. What about torque management? I guess the R/T with the full time All wheel drive comes with some type of torque management? Anyone know how to remove this crappy thing so I can have all the torque I want on demand?
Will a shift kit get rid of the torque managment or is it strictly controlled by the PCM? There are days, that the durango has no bottom end power whatsoever, and there are days that the durango will launch like a rocket on the bottom end. My guess is torque management going crazy.

I have replaced both the tranny sensor and the rear axle speed sensor. Took it out for a few test runs and so far, I do not see the problem coming back. But will try again the next few days when the weather is warmer or much colder to be sure.
