Anyway, after I did get grommets that fit I drilled the rear side of the linkage and installed a ss washer and a ss retainer key.I'll know if the grommet fails again by the shift feel but I'll still be able to shift until the repair..

LOL, funny you say that, I actually was thinking seriously about taking a little self tapping screw and tethering a little cable or chain to the middle of the linkage, so if it ever came off again I wouldn't lose it. Since I just replaced the grommets, it isn't priority one, but I planned on getting myself a thin steel cord or fine chain next time I hit a hardware store or the flea market...

I did that very thing on my trailer foot because I lost my pin. Worked very well and now it always stays with it.

I guess the OP got his answer and resolved his issue. I just checked back to see if what he found underneath. Prolly won't see him post again till something else goes wrong with his vehicle...

Ok, now here is the deal, at least on the Ram, but yours should share the same parts:
The rod was changed after '06. So if you lose yours and go buy a new one the part # is 52105555AA this rod will work in older vehicles as well and the older style is no longer available.

IF you purchase the new rod, it will require a different clamp (52105212) and clamp bolt (J018077) as well as the grommets. The shifter side grommet is 52105551AB and the transfer case side grommet is 5080227AA.

If you have your pre-'07 rod (as I do - now that I found it) then the grommets for both sides are the same and the part # for them is 68078974AA, obviously you'll need two.

It's a b*tch to press those grommets in with your fingers, I used a set of channel locks and squeezed and they pressed right in...

Hope this helps...
This part your showing is the wrong part. I bought one of those and its to long, the one I need is shorter. What I ended up doing with it was cutting a 3/4" section out the re-welding it, but when I tried installing it, it was in there at an angle. In other words, the grommets were in there at an angle. It didnt work, so now Im looking for the right part. I found it a while back online, but I lost it before I could purchase it.

Thank you for this solution! I was driving my 2003 Ram 1500 when the linkage broke. When it happened, the truck seemed to get stuck in neutral, so I couldn't drive it anymore - the engine just revved. I got help pushing the truck to the side of the street to park it. The linkage arm fell on the ground, and the 4WD shifter is loose and floppy. Can I manually shift it into gear from underneath just to get me to a place where I can fix this? What direction should I move the arm - forward or back? Does the truck need to be running? Column shifter in neutral? Or does that not matter?
Thank you in advance for any advice!
