Default 2001 durango 4x4 (4.7l) interchange?

I need an engine for my 2001 4x4 (4.7l) and noticed that durangos, jeep comanders, etc up to 2007 still use the 4.7.. Wanted to know which engines will work. I want to try and buy the newest engine with the least miles that will work.

First you need to know what tooth engine you have. Look at the PCM on the passenger fire wall and see if it has 4 plugs or 3 plugs. 3 plugs are a 16 tooth engine, and 4 plugs is a 32 tooth engine. It's easier to order the correct engine then to modify one to the other.

Basically a 2001 and lower is going to be a 16 tooth, but they started to make 32 tooth systems half way through the 2001 year. First figure out what system you have and go from there.

Can someone help with a sticky situation...? Sold a 32tooth 4.7l engine to a local shop knowing they would have to change the tone wheel on right side head to match the 16t setup in the Durango but still wont start, cam code..do you have to change the 'crank gear' also? Lot at stake, any info would help, 3 plug PCM and matching 16t tone wheel installed...thanks in advance!

You have a 32 tooth cam on the passenger side as well as a 32 tooth tone ring on the crank. The truck wont start because the tone ring on the crank is not a 16 tooth tone ring, yet the tone ring on the cam is a 32.....See what I'm saying?

You need to remove the engine and change the tone ring on the crank to match the same as the camshaft for it to run. 16 and 16, and 32 with 32 ya know?
