Default 01 5.9 d fan clutch questions?

hello all, i replaced my fan clutch recently with a severe duty replacement from imperial and thought i had solved the problem. The fan was making a howling noise whenever i hit the accelerator and it was also causing acceleration issues at the same time until i hit about 35 mph after drivig for about 10 minutes after a cold start. I still have this howling whenever i start it up cold and drive for the first 10 minutes or so and its taken away all the ***** it once had. Does anyone know if replacing the oem fan clutch with a severe duty one could be the reason why this is still going on? Is there a possibility that the water pump could be causing this? any help is greatly appreciated ... thanks, brett

The problem is it never sounded like that prior to my oem fan clutch going bad on me. It wasnt a normal howling noise and it was so bad that my d lost a lot of performance while it was happening. thanks for the idea though.

It could be an air flow problem, make sure your radiator, ac condenser, and transmission cooler aren’t clogged with grime or debris. Just take a flashlight and run it all over to find areas that might be clogged (usually the open area just below the bumper).
-And yes, when the fan clutch is engaged there is a very noticeable drag on the engine, this is normal on cold starts or when the engine starts to get above normal operating temp.

What happens is you first need to understand the basics of them. See the are liquid filled, and when hot the grasp the pulley and engauge, also when they have been sitting for a long time the fluid pools at the bottom and that engages the fan. See one the fluid disperses the clutch dis-engages and now you don't have the excessive fan noise (howling).

Now you understand how they work lets talk about what you did. You took a regular clutch and placed a severe duty one in it's place. Well the severe duty clutch is for vehicles that tow or are in need of extra cooling, so this fan will engage even more......LOL......So this makes it "Howl" even more. Regardless if it is regular or heavy duty clutch, they all must loosen up just a bit. After time the relax slightly, but new and worn can lock up more. You should have bought a regular duty clutch unless you use it and need the severe duty cooling.
