Did you check manuals or part numbers or anything? For that matter, call ANY salvage yard, they can tell you what will fit in what. My guess is that it'll fit. Unlikely there was much of a chassis change so soon after it was put into production.

the part numbers are different, but i dont see any reason that it wouldnt fit, the frame didnt change much over the whole run of these trucks.

No they are different.

a 1999 has a 194 FIA
a 2001 has a C205F

A 1998-1999 Durango and a 1997-1999 Dakota is what you are looking for for a direct swap.

They changed to the C205F in 2000-2003 Durango and Dakota.

Really depends on the mechanic experience you have, what you consider to be "hard", and whether you have a garage, a couple of floor jacks, jack stands, a good assortment of sockets/wrenches, etc. and whether you are strong enough to lift a buck-and-a-half pretty easy. I've swapped diffs in a couple of hours, but I've also spent nearly an entire day struggling with one, and I've got maybe 35 years experience of mechanic work.

I haven't pulled a diff from one of these durangos yet, so I can't give you a good idea of how long it should take, but if it's pretty much the same as a dodge Ram, you should be able to manage it in maybe 4 hours if you don't run into seized brake lines or u-bolts, and you have everything you need to do it.

Too cold? Every Alaskan I've ever known would've called -5 a "warm spring morning"

Joking aside, I've spent quite a bit of time in Adak....gotta be pretty tough to stick it out through those winters up there, buddy. Colder than the ***** on a brass monkey on the shady side of an iceberg, it is.
