Default No spark at the plugs?

Hello, I'm new to the fourm.
I have a 99 Durango 5.9 that has no spark at the plugs. Is there something common that goes out to cause this or what should I be looking at as the culprit? Thanks for any help you may have.

My first thought would be a bad cam position sensor (flat disc shaped with 2 wires attached inside dist cap) or a bad crank position sensor (on the back side of the engine below head passenger side) or a bad ignition coil (passenger side front of engine). Have you got a check engine light?

I put my Snap-on scanner on it but it couldn't communicate with the computer for some reason. Without it running can't tell if the light is on or not. Is there a way to check the components you mentioned?

pull the coil wire off the distributor cap and put a spark plug in there and ground it to the engine. Have a friend turn it over and look for spark. if you have spark there change out cap rotor and plug wires. If no spark test to see if you are getting any voltage to the coil. ( forgot how to do that at the moment but im sure someone will speak up) If you got voltage there then bad coil. If not then its time to look at the cam and crank sensors. My next question is does the fuel pump run when you turn the key to on?

Update: I checked the coil before I got in line on the freeway this morning to go to work and it was the culprit. Changed it out and all is good again…

Yep, I went through two coils so far. They are mounted right on the engine and the heat kills them. A common occurence it seems.

Some guys will carry a spare because of this.
