Default Heated Mirrors Don't Work

I have searched for information on my problem but unable to locate. I have a 2003 Durgano SLT Plus. The driver and passenger heated mirrors do not work. The rear defrost does work. I pulled the doors and checked the wiring, don't see any problems. Also checked the fuse for the heated mirrors, not blown.

Any ideas what the problem might be? Could the heating elements in both mirrors be burned out? If so, can I replace just the mirror glass? From reading I understand the heater is actually a plate behind the glass?

Thanks in advance.

Just note... even when the heated mirrors "work" they do so ever so gently. Based on your definition of "work", perfectly operational heated Durango mirrors may not be "working" to your liking.

Just saying. Check the voltage to the glass, check the voltage thru the element and if all is good, you have what you get and that ain't much.

I know the heat is subtle, can't really feel it with your hand, but when all the windows and mirrors are frosted over and the mirror glass doesn't clear, I know they aren't working. I will have to check the voltage, don't know how to do that although I have an ohm meter I've never used so will do some research into that. Thanks for the reply.

Went thru this with my passenger mirror. I found it was easier to replace the entire mirror assembly with one that I ebay'd vs. getting the heated glass. Given that both of yours failed I'd bet there's an electrical problem before the mirrors.

Here's the link to the service manual in case you don't have it already. It'll have the wiring diagrams that'll help you out with troubleshooting. The heater wires for the mirrors should be a seperate connector coming off of them, I believe it's two wires.

FWIW, make sure you set your meter to DC Voltage before you try to check for anything, otherwise you stand the chance of letting out all the magical smoke contained in it!
You should be able to check the heater element itself by unplugging the wires, setting the meter back to OHMS, and reading resistance across the leads goin to the mirror. If it reads as an open circuit then the heating element is bad.

Bob, thanks for the very useful information and the links. I will give this a shot when I get home tonight. The manual link was for a 2002 Durango, I take it the wiring will be the same?

Yep, they're pretty much interchangeable.

Good luck!
