Default drive train problems

Hi everyone,

Looking for help from the experts. I have a 2000 Durango SLT +, 4.7, 4x4 with 120k miles on it. I basically took over the maintanance on the truck after 60k and have not messed with the drive train system at all. Now noticing an non-consistant vibration between 30-50 mph. Feels like an out of balance drive shaft and has a ressonance inside the cab that has a low hum. Sounds like a subwoofer (there is not one in the D) turned all the way up with nothing playing. I notice this mostly on acceleration and occasionally when off the gas and coasting. If I were to guess, it sounds like it's coming from the center of the D near the transfer case. Without looking under nieth the D, I would guess that it would be a drive line carrier bearing going bad, but I dont think the Durango has one. No smells, or excess heat on the wheels (if anyone was thinking wheel bearings) and the problem seems to happen 70% of the time at these speeds. Low speeds no problem and it does appear to go away at high speeds 60+ but havent pushed it much.

Any help would be very much appeciated. I am considering doing the transfer case, differential, and tranny fluids myself. Are these things that a weekend rookie mechanic could tackle?

Thanks much!

Well it sounds like a classic U-joint. Have them checked out by a mechanic. As for your diffs. you need to have the fluid sucked out and replaced. The transfer case is easy although getting fluid back inside requires allot of effort. Make sure you get the right fluid. You got to make sure you buy fluid for Chrysler.[sm=chattypair.gif]
