Okay, I know this is going to sound dumb but how the hell do you get bars off??

on my 98 theres push tabs on each end of the bars that unclamp it. push in the tabs on each side and slide them forward or back right off the mounts. not sure if its the same on your truck though

yup he nailed it, you push in the tabs and slide the bars all the way to the back, there are little plastic pieces that block the channels, make sure to pull those out before trying to remove the bars.
