Default 2000 Durango. Steering column doesn't fit

Hi all,

I'm helping a friend replace a steering column in his 2000 4x4 Durango. I picked up this http://www.apdty.com/item.wws?sku=55...&itempk=124299 . I was helping him install it today (ie: me doing most of the work), and it doesn't fit. 1) it is longer 2) it has splines for the steering box, not a hexagonal shape like the one I took out 3) the top part doesn't fit over the steering shaft.

I'm at a bit of a loss. The car is a 2000 (has a 12/99 build date) and is a 4x4. Was the wrong part shipped to me? It's my understanding that 1997-2000 are the same part. Everything looks the same, despite the differences listed above. The shipping invoice lists the part number for what I received for 1997-2000. Hence my confusion.

Thanks for the help,

Bob

2000 was a changeover year, so there are trucks out there with the 'old' style on stuff, and some with the 'new' it appears you got the wrong part or are missing hardware that you are supposed to swap from one setup to the other

What a pain.

Does my description of the old one match that of the "newer" style? I can take pictures tomorrow.

The link you provided states 97-99 only. Anyhow, Shrpshtr is correct, there was a change in design in 2000. When I swapped mine out last year, I had to provide my VIN for verification... And mine is a 2002.

Thanks.

I was going to call up with the VIN number tomorrow (which I should have done to begin with)
