Default Rear Axle Swap.

Long story short, my pinion nut got loose somehow and my drive shaft pulled out slightly. This causing the pinion bearing to be crushed. My gears themselfs are fine because not much fluid leaked out. So I called a few places to get prices to get the job done and i got quoted $1,000-$1,500 for parts and labor. So my thought is to buy a junker rear end. I found one for $300 bucks. My glove box told me I have 3.55 ratio with anti-spin. So can i use all the Durango years for a rear end(98-03 9.25")?

Yup, however if i where you i would look for a '03 rear end. That was the first year for the rear disc brakes. If your planning on swapping the rear anyway why not get something better right?

There have been several here that have done the swap... have not heard of any major issues with it... here is a thread on it...

also the 2000-03 9.25" has 33spline count axels and 1970-99 had 31 spline axels. No difference unless you want to tear into the diff yourself or a shop does for certain part numbers.

I thought about tearing into the diff my self but I or anyone I know has messed with one and i was told by many places that theres special tools you need to do it correctly. With the skills I have personally, swapping the whole thing is the way to go.

I'd just use it as a good excuse to put the rear disk brakes on with a new axle.
