Default Truck stuck in 3rd Gear

99 durango 5.9 L

Ive done some research on the issue and it looks like i have to change the transmission soleniod/pressure sensor and governor. Advanced Auto has the soleniod but they dont recognize the other parts, does anyone have the part #'s ?

Im going to change the filter while im in there.

This is the text where I found what I should change can anyone verify ? And where is the best place to buy the parts.

Thanks !

"for everyone that is having a problem with the Durangos not shifting properly like getting stuck in one gear which is usually 3/4 and it doesn't accelerate worth a crap the reason it does this is because its a fail safe for when your solenoid gos out which is actually a pretty easy fix and only takes about an hour to fix just replace the governor pressure transducer and pressure solenoid and solenoid overdrive/lockup. altogether these parts should cost about 150-190 dollars this will normally fix your problem if not check your PCM before going for the tranny rebuild most dealerships will tell you its your tranny because they are just trying to rip you off i would definitely try to replace the solenoids before anything else its typically the most common part to go out related to the shifting problems."

This is something that pisses me off as a technician working at a dealership! As a tech we are responsible for fixing the problem, and if it is a transmission issue, it is a transmission issue. If it's something more than a transmission issue, than it's something more than a transmission issue.

We as the technician have to properly diagnose the problem and go from there. I have never (nor have I ever) misdiagnosed a problem going as far as tearing into the transmission and having the customer pay for my mistake.

I think that you are way out of line making a bold statement like that, especially saying that we are just trying to tear into the transmission just to make a couple of bucks... Shame on you.

FYI, it's the transmission governor pressure solenoid and transducer (sensor). The Mopar part numbers are as follows, you can do the cross reference. When it comes to transmission I wouldn't go aftermarket, just go with the dealer part...

Governor Pressure Solenoid - Mopar Part # 4617210
Governor Pressure Transducer (Sensor) - Mopar Part # 56028196AD

If that doesn't fix the problem try replacing the output speed sensor located on the tail shaft of the transmission. It's a cheap $10 part and spins on and is an easier fix than dropping the pan and replacing the governor pressure solenoid and transducer. Also, when you say it gets stuck in one gear and doesn't shift, this is called "Limp Mode". There is many reasons it will go into limp mode and I wouldn't replace those items unless you have tested and made sure that is what's going to fix your problem.

LOL

Well the dealer has tools we normal people and shop do not, and also specialty equipment as well. Now I personally don't like dealerships because they are expensive, but they have the right equipment as well, it's a trade off.

One thing I don't like about dealers is they have a high turn over rate on mechanics, I blame this on recruiting young fresh schooled mechanics. But again, they have the right fluids,......ect.

But either way, whether it is a dealership or a local shop, I don't like ANYONE touching my trucks.....LOL

Thank you white widow for the detailed info I really appreciate it, I know when the code was read it was a service transmission code and they told me it was most likely the soleniod. I will check the cheaper part out first though since its cheap and easy to do.

Is there any issue with driving the truck around in limp mode for about a week ?

Do you still have the code stored in the computer, if so what is it? Just wondering.

Also, depending on what exactly is wrong with the internals, in theory as long as you don't drive it above 25 mph it shouldn't mess anything up, but I'm going to strongly advise against it. Drive it as minimal as possible and only if you have to, especially with the transmission doing what it is doing.

Ill see if I can read it tomorrow the check engine light is still on. I change the output speed sensor already and unfortunately it wasn't the issue. This truck is my DD and I cant really work on it on weekdays, my drive to work is fairly short maybe drive 23 miles round trip ive been taking it real easy on the truck.

Im almost sure the code was P0753

Thanks,

Nick
