Well the 4.7l seems to be pretty temperamental. But 215 shouldn't have dropped the valve seat. But you never know, one could have been installed wrong One thing I love about my 5.9L it the low end torque especially when starting out on steep hills or pulling out stuck fords LOL.

As for misinformation, excuse me for lumping the 5.2 tranny with the 5.9, brain fart I guess, woops!
Your analogy is null, simple open and closed case, that's that. What is written, people can assess that information and judge for themselves. Like I said, I'm just clearing up the miss information, laying down what was stated.

I would NEVER have thought 215* would crap out an engine and I'm still not sure it's the cause for my dropped valve seat. If that's the case, then Chrysler has engineered a total POS engine IMO...
Under normal engines this shouldn't have caused and issue, but in the actual world for the time I've known those years 4.7L it is an issue, even if it was only 215 F maximum.

Yep, Shocker I gotta agree, since mine dropped and I can attest 215* was the highest I've ever seen my gauge - but it would run at 210* all the time with the air on in traffic. Wouldn't think 15* over the thermostat temp would be enough.

Becoming VERY widespread among the older 4.7s (1999-2002) been a LOT of replies from guys had it happen over on the Jeep forums and the 3rd Gen Ram section here is starting to get a lot of posts from guys with dropped valve seats. Some of these poor guys are having the dealer do the repairs and are getting nailed for well over $4000!

Have seen a couple '03s on the Jeep forums, but nobody newer than '02 here yet.

BTW, my heads are back and they peened every seat during the rebuild. Rebuild kit is here and I've given all 8 cylinders a fine hone. Three day weekend from work - so I get started in earnest tomorrow morning. Wish me luck. I've only ever dug close to this deep on a 4.0 I6 before and that was kid's play compared to this modular, OHC monstrosity.

Now what is becoming alarming is I'm starting to hear it from Hemi guys! I was under the impression that this was a 3.7/4.7 thing and the Hemi was pretty much a broken spring thing, but I'm seeing a few confirmed cases of dropped valve seats in Hemi engines. Have a personal friend with a Challenger in the shop now with a dropped valve seat - luckily for him - he's under warranty.

BTW 'Shocker, I've got debris in the intake manifold - carnage went up through it and even made it to the other head. Was gonna replace but can't find an '02 HO intake anywhere (was changed for '03), you think a flush would suffice to clean it out???

My 2001 Dodge Durango 4.7L Engine has low oil pressure with only 125,000 miles, how do you change oil pump and where is it loaded?

you should probably start a new thread for that so that you'll get an answer quicker, or before the mods bust your *****. You could probably search around the forum and find some answers in the meantime. If I had a 4.7 I'd offer some help, but I've never touched one.

Default I think it depends on the owner.

I have an 01 D 4.7 4x4 and I have 217k miles and my engine is great. Dont get me wrong I would probably rather have the 5.9 but if you take care of the engine it should take care of you 🤘 #moparornocar

You're responding to 2012, but yeah it all depends on how you take care of it.

I've had both engines. The 5.9 that was in the truck I sold, still runs today with over 300K and has lasted through a few transmissions. My current 4.7 is also over 300K and feels like it's still new. Personally I prefer the COP design of the 4.7L. Use a good synthetic & never let the oil or coolant get low. It's all simple maintenance and this has been the cheapest vehicle that I've ever owned.

Old thread I know, but I just don't care for the 4.7s at all. When I bought my Durango and my most recent Dakota I passed up many that "looked nice" but had the 4.7 in them. As long as 318 (5.2) and 360 (5.9) powered vehicles are still out there I will own at least 1. I have never owned anything else but a Dodge product in 36 years of owning and driving vehicles. I have had many 318s and 360s plus a few slant 6s and 3.9s. I see no reason to go onto something else unless/until I have to.

I hear horror stories galore in the 4.7s, that is enough for me. I know that maintenance (or lack of) plays a part but even considering that I hear enough from my dealer tech buddies to want to stay away from a 4.7 engine.

Then you probably shouldn't be driving a Dodge product, period. They get talked about in the worst way, yet we know different. A 4.7 needs only basic maintenance to last a very long time.

i gotta disagree with you there, I've never "NOT" had a Dodge. All that I have ever owned. Well except for the 3, 4.0 inline 6 Jeeps that I have had over the years. But I have always had 1 more vehicle in the driveway than I have had drivers living here. Never once owned a GM, never once owned a Ford,, or god forbid an import of any brand. Actually currently looking for another full size truck, Don't want anything but a Dodge, and this one will be a 93 or older like so many I wish I would have kept. I'm looking at CL in the south because I want rust free.
