Default 2002 Durango Drivetrain settings

So when I test drove a 02 Durango 4.7L today I noticed the switch for the 4x4 had 3 settings, AWD, 4Hi, and 4Lo. So what does AWD do differently then 4Hi or Lo? Is it a symetrical 4x4 system? Im just curious...

Awd is pretty much having 4x4 all the time, except u can actually use AWD on pavement.

awd couples the front and rear axles together with a viscous coupler so that you can safely use it on dry pavement, 4x4hi locks the front and rear axles together, and 4x4 lo-range reduces the gear ratio of 4x4 hi
