Just came over to the Durango family from an Audi....
I got a 2001 5.9L SLT. I read a few posts about exhaust, but I would like to hear it on my post. Are people running a single pipe usually or two pipes? I know there is only one notch in the bumper. What looks better, single or dual? I'm thinking of going with Magnaflow. My brother had it on his 4.7L Ram and it sounded really good. I'm also going to probably get the SuperChips tuner and a K&N cone filter. Any other suggestions to give the 5.9L a little extra power? I'm not looking to go crazy on mods. Are these good choices to go with, in regards to product brands?
My Durango is pretty similar to yours but I have 4WD and it's a 2000. I just put a AirAid CAI on my truck and that seems to have helped wake up some low to mid range power. I also added the throttle body spacer. I am hoping to see some economy at the pump but so far i've just had my foot in the trottle a bit much. Next will be the Magnaflow cat back exhaust. I decide to not go with duals for two reasons. 1. It would necesitate the removal or use of a space saver spare. No thanks. 2. I don't like the way the Dual looks on these SUVs. It was designed for a single exhaust and unless you add all the piping for a true dual I don't see the benefit and even then a good flowing tuned exhaust should perform as well. I like that the Magnaflow is close tot he stock muffler in interior noise. I have heard the rumble out side is quite nice too. Not sure about the chips yet. To me it would seem the only reason to chip is to get power that requires premium fuel and I'm not certain I need that expense. I know it can be used to get performance at 87 octane, but that seems to be a lot of expense and playing to get a couple of ponies I could probably get through better breathing etc. Hope you enjoy your rig as much as i do mine.
I too just switched from Eurotrash (Volvo) to a Durango. So far, so good. Anyhoo, like you, I was pondering on what to do with the exhaust. From what i've seen, there's a few options but none are perfect. I've read where people have run duals without losing the spare but it's pretty tight in that area and I'm not getting a warm fuzzy running hot exhaust pipes so close to the only spare tire on board. True duals would be nice (and the only real performance option in my opinion) but you still end up with the spare tire issue and I understand it takes some creative bending done by a skillful exhaust bender to pull this off right. So that leaves us with the large bore, cat back system. I personally would prefer at least catback duals but the large bore single seems to be the most practical way to get a good sounding modified exhaust with some prformance increase. The only other issue is mufflers and this is an individual taste issue. The most popular for the durangos are the 40 series Flowmasters and the Magnaflows. I haven't heard either yet so I'm still up in the air. In fact, i'm completely up in the air as to what i'm going to do. As for induction, I've talked to a couple of people who really like the K&N filters. I had one on my Mustang and my Maxima and I liked them. I'll probably go this route. All this would come together nicely with a chip but as stated before, gas prices are cruel these days and I was happy that I no longer had to have premium fuel when I bought the Durango (my last four vehicles required premium).
1Fast Durango- Did you buy an R/T? that is the only 5.9L motor I know that requires Premium to get the output claims. As mentioned above, I've been running on lower grade with my 5.9L SLT 4x4. I put mid grade in this last tank and noticed no increase in economy and maybe some performance, but I also added the CAI recently too. We'll see how it meters out...so far net gain economy 0. But power is smoother and more responsive. Need the exhaust.
I have a 03 durango, with a 4.7 . Speaking of the hyper, or superchip, I
got the superchip microtuner, and Man what a difference! I have a completely
funtional hood with K&N cool air kit also. That 4.7 has lots of power now. I love
it!. I have to run premium fuel though. But it is not a huge difference in cost
when you really think about it. And it was worth the money to me to get the
performance that it should have. It runs up grades and does not downshift now,
and runs at lower RPMS .Shift points are more in time with powerband. I have
nothing bad to say about the superchip. I have not checked the miles per gallon
difference yet. Still to new if you know what I mean; I cant seem to keep my foot
out of the throttle ever sense.
