Default Transmission bands

I've seen several posts talking about Band adjustments... what are they, how do you check, etc.

Reason I ask is that it seems like it's slipping a little, have had a few hard shifts, and when the transmission is cold reverse is weak.

Get the truck up to proper operating temp, find a level area, shift though all the ranges leaving it in for atleast 2 sec, put in in neutral and check the fluid level....

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few months ago and it turned out to be low fluid.

If its okay then adjust the bands... might wanna change the filter/fluids since you have to drop the pan anyways..


Remember to ONLY USE ATF+4!

C'mon gotta get hi-tech! I used ATF+12!!!

In all seriousness, also check your TV cable!

There are 2 sets of bands. Basically there is 2 different drums in the trans. There is a band that wraps around each one. The bands look like brake linings, yet on a belt inverted against the drum. As you place it in gear the band rubs against the drum and grips like a snowmobile clutch system.

The adjustment is the clearance between the drum and the band face. If too tight it causes harsh engagement, if to loose causes harsh engagement and slippage.

What you want is to drop the pan and replace the filter on the 46RE, 44RE, and 42RE transmission. On the 4.7L engine it is the 45RFE and 454RFE transmission, and on this trans is 2 filters and no adjustment.

Back on the RE transmissions there again is 2 bands, one forward and one reverse. The adjustment screws are located on the outside and inside of the transmission pan. Forward is located on the outside on the drivers side by the linkage. It looks like a screw with a nut on the outside.

What you do (on the RE transmissions) is drop the pan (and fluid) and find the forward drum by locating the adjuster on the drivers side and pull down on the band and adjust the tension so there is like 1/4" to 1/2" play between the two. Then lock it down with the nut on the outside of the adjuster.

Then the reverse band adjuster is on the inside of the pan, yet looks just like the forward gear adjuster. You loosen the nut on the outside then screw in the inner slotted screw to adjust the band tighter or back it off for looser. Then you lock it down once you get the same adjustment.

Replace the filter, then lube a new rubber gasket (I like them from the dealer) with slight wetness of wheel bearing grease and torque in sequence as per the manual. Then refill with ATF+4 fluid only. I like Valvoline Fully Synthetic ATF+4.

Fill with about 6 quarts of fluid and start the truck and do the transmission fill procedure with the engine running and in neutral. Top off to the fill line which should take 6-8 quarts of ATF+4 to the line and don't overfill.
